Project: Reviving the Jensen-Byrd Building as a Thriving Cultural Hub in Spokane
Year: 2023 (ongoing)

Spokane, Washington, USA

Challenge:

The Jensen-Byrd Building presents an exciting opportunity for revitalization as a vibrant cultural hub in downtown Spokane. Sound Diplomacy, a leading consultancy specialising in music and cultural development, was engaged by the landowners and local arts organisation, Terrain, to lead the vision.

Strategy:

Sound Diplomacy collaborated with renowned design firm Studio Egret West, working closely with the stakeholders of the Jensen-Byrd Building to develop a compelling vision for its revitalization. Extensive discussions were held to understand the goals and aspirations for the project. Based on the unique character of the Jensen-Byrd Building, Sound Diplomacy and Studio Egret West crafted a comprehensive vision. The plan included the establishment of a public market food venue on the ground floor, artist studios, recording spaces, and co-working areas in the middle, and residential units on the upper floors. The vision aimed to transform the building into an accessible and inclusive cultural hub that seamlessly integrated with the surrounding downtown environment.

To showcase the potential benefits of the project, Sound Diplomacy presented case studies highlighting successful cultural hubs from around the world. These case studies emphasised the positive outcomes in terms of funding opportunities, partnerships, community engagement, and overall cultural enrichment. By highlighting these success stories, Sound Diplomacy aimed to garner support from stakeholders and generate excitement for the project's potential.

Outcomes & Next Steps:

The initial work Sound Diplomacy engaged in has successfully established a compelling vision for the transformation of the Jensen Byrd Building into a thriving cultural hub. Moving forward, Sound Diplomacy will conduct a comprehensive feasibility assessment to evaluate the financial viability of the project. This assessment will consider factors such as revenue generation, funding sources, and cost analysis. Leveraging the insights gained from research and surveying, Sound Diplomacy will develop a robust business plan that outlines the necessary steps to realise the vision. The collaborative efforts of Sound Diplomacy and Studio Egret West will guide the successful implementation of the project and ensure its long-term sustainability.
