MUSIC, ENTERTAINMENT, AND CULTURAL INDUSTRIES STRATEGY
Year feb 2024

CHALLENGE

Music is at the heart of Puerto Rican culture, permeating every corner of the island. From the minute you arrive, melodies and rhythms fill the air, resonating in San Juan’s bustling streets, beachside gatherings, and small-town festivals. This vibrant culture is a keystone of Puerto Rican identity, featuring world-renowned genres like salsa, reggaetón, and bomba, each contributing to the island’s unique and compelling soundscape.

Puerto Rico stands out as a music tourism capital and a global talent powerhouse. Yet, to fully harness this cultural richness and build a more prosperous creative economy, InvestPR enlisted Sound Diplomacy to lay the foundation for a dynamic Music, Entertainment, and Cultural Industries Strategy.

strategy

This Music, Entertainment and Cultural Industries Strategy aims to leverage Puerto Rico’s creative industries as a driving force for economic growth, innovation, and cultural expression, drawing new business and investment to the island while bolstering its cultural influence across Latin America and the Caribbean.

  • Regulatory Assessment and Comparative Analysis

Sound Diplomacy conducted a review of local and regional reports, plans, policies, and regulations relevant to Puerto Rico’s creative industries. The analysis included a regulatory assessment of current country-wide regulations impacting the creative industries’ ecosystem, as well as providing each with a relevant best practice case study to guide how existing regulations can be made more accommodating to the sector.

  • Mapping Analysis

Using our own web scraping and mapping tools, Sound Diplomacy mapped the assets from the creative industries in Puerto Rico to create an interactive map tool that offers a glimpse on the geographical distribution of the assets and the potential gaps or networks created by said distribution. This exercise also informs the project’s economic impact assessment.

  • Economic Impact Assessment

The economic impact analysis was based on official secondary sources and statistics, complemented by primary research conducted by Sound Diplomacy. It provides a reliable measure of the economic importance of the Creative Industries in Puerto Rico on two different scales: direct and indirect impact.

  • Stakeholder engagement

Sound Diplomacy conducted a total of 12 stakeholder engagement sessions with over 60 stakeholders engaged through roundtables and one-on-one interviews, where they were asked to provide their opinions and perspectives on the state of the creative industries in the island.

  • Strategic plan

Informed by the above research and analysis, a set of 26 actionable recommendations that serve as a blueprint for developing and maintaining thriving creative industries in Puerto Rico were proposed.

Findings & outcomes

InvestPR has adopted the strategic plan and recommendations, and continues to work towards supporting the local music, entertainment and creative industries with this strategy in mind.
